    Most recent versions and download links

    Hello all,

    maybe it would be a good idea to repost links to the newest versions here:

    Symbian^3 and S60 5th Edition devices – 0.8.6:

    http://nokia.trac.wordpress.org/export/772/builds/symbian/WordPress_Beta_0_8_6_selfsigned_installer.sis

    Nokia N900 – 0.8.6 available in extras-devel repository.

    S60 3rd edition – 0.8.4:

    http://nokia.trac.wordpress.org/browser/builds/symbian/WordPress_0_8_4_selfsigned_installer_no_location.sis

    All the builds available in the trac: http://nokia.trac.wordpress.org/browser/builds/symbian

    As mentioned here, 3rd edition build is not very good and usable because the focus has been on 5th ed and S^3.

    Ovi Store build is currently a bit outdated (0.8.2), we’ll try to get it updated any day now.

      Hi,

      I was wondering about installing it on my Nokia E5. When I first installed it via WordPress_0_8_4_selfsigned_installer_no_location.sis the wordpress icon just sat there in the menu doing nothing. I tried installing the latest Qt package, tried complete uninstall, tried 0.8.2 – to no avail. All I could get was that it just stopped installing. After hard reset I tried installing 0.8.4 again – different picture, it just wouldn’t install, “installation failed”. For 0.8.2 – it stays on @Preparing installation” forever.

      Is there anything at all I can try on my S60 3.2 phone? And how come the picture is different after hard reset? Shouldn’t I be getting the same reactions?

      At the moment I have to revert to Wordmobi, but I’d love to try your application instead. Is it possible to install and run it on E5?

      Thank you in advance.

        Never mind. I installed 8.0.2 by cleaning out ever WordPress installation file out of every directory on my memory card. Installed the last version of Qt – and it works. Will try to update to 0.8.4 now.

    Little fix for N8, C6-01, C7 and E7

    Hi,

    there was some packaging issues with the builds causing them not to install properly on Symbian^3 devices.

    Here’s the new smart installer build that should install to N8 and others – please remove the old versions before installing this.

    http://nokia.trac.wordpress.org/export/679/builds/symbian/WordPress_0_8_2_selfsigned_installer_N8.sis

    This should also work with other devices, but I didn’t test it yet.

        At that stage, it is a problem with the smart installer. Unfortunately we don’t know why it is doing that, as it is a separate piece of software made by Nokia. Good that it worked for you in the end though :)

          Found a possible bug that WordPress for Nokia v0.84 only lets me upload to draft and not publish to my blog. I have to load up the site and publish from draft. Also would love to add images in client but not found option on Nokia N8 with v011.012 FW.

            Hi mbrett,

            At least on our N8 it works without problems.

            Did you change post state to ‘Published’ from combo box?

            And ‘Add photos…’ button works also. Did you have some problems with that or did you miss that?

              Forgot one other issue. Missed the others as was in landscape and missed the additional settings below. I know dumb mistake. We all make them every so often.

              Anyway the Issue I forgot to mention is the lack of capitals on first letter in text fields. This is a known issue seen by other devs.

              Tried selecting caps and all caps also does not work. have to type first random character and then capitalise second before removing original random character. Only work around I’ve found so far.

                At least on our N8 you can capitalize first letter with no problem. I don’t need to use any tricks to do it.

                Or do you mean that it should auto capitalize first letter?

                  The problem goes away with 0.82 (OVI Store) and 0.85 versions.

                • mbrett 6:02 pm on November 5, 2010 Permalink | Reply

                  The problem was that it was impossible to have the first character in the text entry field capitalised. Could have capitals after that.

      qtwebkit 2.1, qtwebkit, qtmobility 1.02, qmlparticleplugin, qmlgetureplugin, qmlfolderlistmodelplugin, qt, qt4.7.0 opengl installed on C: and I cannot install the wordpress file???

      It installs proper and then starts the verification (2nd installation routine) and then it shows only “abortet bla bla” :-(

        Done by myself… Used a little tool to extract the content of the .sis File above. Installed only WordPress 085beta.sis and (oh halleluja!) everything worked fine :-) So you can be sure its the “Smart Installer” which causes the problems…

      • ahvenlam 9:53 am on November 15, 2010 Permalink | Reply

        Well, you can skip the smart installer if you use the “update” package. That’s the same package you extracted from the installer sis file. However we don’t support Qt 4.7 yet because that hasn’t been released for symbian. And you probably find some issues that aren’t working because you are using Qt 4.7.

    News for E71, E72, E63 and E75 owners

    Hello all,

    after getting your feedback especially regarding the support for keyboard phones we have decided that the next 3 weeks will be spent in making the E-series experience as good as possible – including

    • keyboard navigation
    • overall usability
    • small screen layout
    • keyboard shortcuts (I’m a fan of Opera Mini shortcut system – we might borrow some ideas from there)
    • other necessary tweaks and bug fixes

    Me and futusaber will be posting weekly builds and the goal is to release the keyboard optimized small-screen build by the end of July.

    Thanks for the patience dear E-series users – we haven’t forgotten you.

    Edit: Removed E5 from the title – it’s not yet available so there are no owners. E75 is actually much more relevant.

    Version 0.7 – what’s going to happen

    Hello all,

    for the next major version we’ve outlined couple of things that will have to be addressed. These are:

    • User interface
    • Annoying bugs

    When it comes to the UI, we all see that the application looks and feels a bit like a wireframe sketch of an application. Also the UI update mechanisms require some refactoring – for example we update way too many UI elements when just a few ones would do the trick. We pay also attention to need for synchronous / asynchronous operations – could we do some updating on background without the “please wait” signs?

    We also may have to pay attention to devices with keyboard navigation (like E72). Currently we’ve been using a one-size-fits-all approach, but after your feedback it looks like we need to separate the keyboard vs. touch navigation more from each other.

    That will hopefully result in

    • better usability with keyboard devices
    • more optimized UI for touch devices
    • small screen optimizations

    We’ll be updating the blog with UI drawings, plans and hopefully some release schedule during the next days/weeks.

    …and again, if you have any suggestions of what should be there please let us know! We’re open to all ideas,

    BR,

      One thing my e71 latest version os and 0.6.0 automate doesn’t work. And when editing if I want to go up the body of the text I have to scroll left through the whole text to get to the section I need. Finally t9 type doesn’t work properly, works while typing but after that it treats it as single letters.

      Hope this helps

    • Janne Vainio 8:01 am on May 5, 2010 Permalink | Reply

      Maybe this has been already corrected but just checking,that have you already corrected your “nonscaled image transmission loop” (wpnetworkengine.cpp), it seems to leak memory causing memory-full error when too big pictures are sent.
      below is the while loop for transmission (from code 0.6.9). As you can see, you are losing the original ba-pointer when doing ba.toBase64(). Thus you clear just the new allocation, not the original ba.
      My understanding is, that toBase64 will make a NEW copy of the buffer?

      while (bytesAvailable > 0)
      {
      QByteArray ba(file.read(KChunkSize));
      ba = ba.toBase64();
      QString string(ba);
      ba.clear();
      writer.writeCharacters(string);
      bytesAvailable = file.bytesAvailable();
      }
      writer.writeEndElement(); // base64
      file.close();
      }

      Here is the code, which I tried and were able to send my pictures (3 megas worth) without memory full error:

      while (bytesAvailable > 0)
      {
      QByteArray ba(file.read(KChunkSize));
      QString string(ba.toBase64());
      ba.clear();
      writer.writeCharacters(string);
      string.clear();
      bytesAvailable = file.bytesAvailable();
      }
      writer.writeEndElement(); // base64
      file.close();
      }

    Qt and phone memory requirements (N97 C-drive)

    Hi all,

    I believe it’s time to say something about the massive phone memory requirement that we seem to have.

    First of all, WordPress for Nokia installs OK into MMC – no problems with that 238 KB. Anyway most of us suffer from the lack of available memory in N97. Qt libraries require some 10 M of phone memory to install and cannot be installed on memory card. That’s sad indeed. Currently Qt installs itself to phone memory only which is a known issue: http://qt.gitorious.org/qt/pages/Qt460KnownIssues

    The issue is acute with Symbian devices only. Some other devices have already all the necessary Qt libraries preinstalled: http://labs.trolltech.com/blogs/2010/04/01/pr-12-sdk-for-maemo-released-with-qt-46/
    With these devices you don’t have to install Qt at all.

    Can we do something about it? Shortly: no. Unfortunately the Qt footprint is pretty huge at the moment and there’s at the moment nothing we can do about it.

    Feel free to comment!

    p.s. Thanks Micky for the great post on Qt Symbian Smart Installer and what it is about: http://www.nokiadna.com/?p=708

      I’m using the 32G Nokia X6. Followed instructions – installed Qt into the c:\ and the WP app into the Mass Memory drive. Posting text blogs work fine. No lag. However, everytime I try to add a picture to the blog, the programme says my phone’s out of memory and the WP app closes. Really annoying. FYI, I still have 225MB of free space in my c:\ and tons more memory on my Mass Memory drive. Surely that’s sufficient?

      If I can’t post pictures with the WP app, then I’m going to revert to using Wordmobi to blog. It’s stable and I can post links and pictures, although the interface is not as neat as the WPapp.

        a) Image selection list is opened
        b) Image is selected
        c) Image is added to a post
        d) A post with an image is published

        I’m afraid it’s d) but please confirm. Have you checked with the option to resize images? Does it affect the crash?

    0.6.0 new features and schedule

    Hi all,

    thanks for the feedback on 0.6.0 features. Many of the responses mentioned the possibility to link. That is definitely something that is currently quite hard to do and we’ll be working on it. As Android client has shown a clean, nice way to include some rich-text editing we are not going to reinvent the wheel. We’ll be using pretty similar approach in 0.6.0. which should make it easy to write bold text, italic, block quotes and links:

    More interesting thing are the stats. Everybody sees it important, even the iPhone folks.
    The main problems in implementing the stats are:

    • API key is required – how to keep the ui simple with another long text input
    • Requires in most cases wordpress.com -hosted blog

    Anyway, we’ll be trying it out with 0.6.0 – let’s see how we succeed. The plan is here:

    We’re planning to have these available by the end of the month. The bug fixing (currently focusing on image upload issue) is going on parallel, so you shouldn’t have to wait too long to get your hands on with the new builds.

      please don’t forget about copy/paste and it would be good it you could correct the T9 input problem, spell check. Today morning I was trying to include lists into post… will that be possible?

      • Micky 6:10 pm on March 4, 2010 Permalink | Reply

        Agreed, copy and paste is a must, and T9, which would rule out the need for a spell checker.

                  Sadly, i just typed out around 200 words, and hit save, and sadly, although it attempted to upload new post for a little longer, it failed again. Prompted, Error Occurred, Connection timed out.

                  Also, lost everything I typed once again.

                      Looks like its working, prompted changed from adding new post, to fetching posts.

                      …..

                      Its worked.!

                      Here’s my work

                      http://www.nokiadna.com/?p=109

                      Also, as to saving in drafts, Im not entirely sure if I accidentally selected local draft instead of publish, either way, its reassuring that the work was not lost, and even though it failed initially, its all not in vain.

                      • Janne Kalliomäki 4:42 pm on February 24, 2010 Permalink

                        Good to hear that it works! In the future we might add some kind of a notification for the user that basically says that “your publishing failed, post saved to local drafts” as it is currently not obvious that the post is in local drafts.

    • Micky 4:58 pm on February 24, 2010 Permalink | Reply

      Agreed, that would be handy, also a safety measure to prevent user completely exiting the app with an “Are you sure you wish to Exit WordPress” kind of warning when exit is selected in error.

      Update with my tests. Adding an image don’t work. My last test I chose to add an image from device, and after chosing image, I was not presented with any confirmation, or any indication image being added. I uploaded my test post, and although the post uploaded successfully to my blog, no image there.

    • Micky Aldridge 6:48 pm on February 24, 2010 Permalink | Reply

      Further update. Tried again with a short body of text, and then added an image. The image was added successfully this time, so possibly my error before.

      We need to have oversized images resized during upload, maybe to a standard template, as the image I added was a standard full sized photo taken with 5mp N97 camera, and photo was too large for my standard columns in my blog.

      Maybe set auto resize to something like 500×450?

      • Janne Kalliomäki 6:49 pm on February 24, 2010 Permalink | Reply

        There is actually a setting for resizing images. You can set it when setting up a blog or then by selecting Blogs from the options menu and choosing Edit from context menu. If you enable the resizing, it will scale the images down to 640×480.

        • Micky 4:59 am on February 25, 2010 Permalink | Reply

          Thanks, I remember now, when setting mu blog up, I recall seeing resize images. Is there any way to change the default 640×480 to a little smaller,? As this is slightly too big for me.

        • Micky 3:14 pm on February 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

          Hi Janne, Any news on this? Would be an idea to have a choice of resizing templates, as different blogs have different sized columns.

          • Janne Kalliomäki 10:13 pm on February 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

            Hi Micky, we need to think about what would be the optimal size of resized images. I am not sure whether adding a new option for the size is a good solution or whether it would clutter the user interface too much. I will talk to other stakeholders and ask their opinions as well.

            Regarding the image uploads, I have made some optimizations (see commits 49 and 52) to the memory usage during upload, so uploads should work better in the next release.

            I’m having a nightmare here with WordPress since having to hard reset my device. N97 running V21 firmware. No idea why is crashing when launched, as it was working perfectly before. I have installed the q libraries to phone memory, and the WordPress client, but each time I launch WordPress, it reboots my N97. I’m uploading a short video to show you whats happening.

            • Micky 4:50 pm on March 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

              Here the video. I will reinstall the libraries, see if that makes any difference.

                Reinstallation of libraries didn’t fix it. Im now considering resetting, formatting, and reinstalling the firmware. Any other suggestions before I do all this?

                  Update. Performed just an hard reset, and the first thing I installed was the qt installer, then the libraries, and finally the client. It worked perfectly. However, after proceeding to install Ovi Maps, and getting that up and running, when I returned to wordpress, although it launched, and didn’t crash, it did throw up an error, saying host not found, check blog url. My settings are all correct, so somehting is a miss somewhere.

                  Is there anyhting you guys need me to check, or try?

                    Hi Micky,

                    thanks for the report. Looks like we need to contact Qt guys with this – our app shouldn’t be able to reboot your device. We’ll be testing this and trying to reproduce it.

                    “Host not found” sounds like a network issue – can you access the internet with the browser?

                    Regarding the development, we’ll be having a meeting on Thursday and will post the update about 0.6.0 new features immediately after that. We might also be able to say something about the schedule, but nothing promised yet.

                      Thanks for the response. No rush, I quite enjoy all this testing, although it would probably really test other patients, but I’m very keen on problem solving, and beta testing.

                      Seems that it is a qt issue, removed maps, and still the same.

                      Regarding browser, and network, I can connect to the web fine.

        things like twitter and facebook updates I believe are easier handled on the server side rather than on the client side. Plenty of plugins for self-hosted sites, and built in support on WordPress.com: http://en.support.wordpress.com/twitter/

        • thewinchesterau 1:52 am on February 17, 2010 Permalink | Reply

          Agreed there, I made a similar comment not knowing WP.com supported this built-in as a preference per blog.

          The problem is this suggestion, like mine, is likely made after information on how to achieve this not being immediately obvious to the user via the dashboard. This is really a result of a lacking UI/UX design for the dashboard which requires the user to understand how the application works rather than presenting a logical task-oriented model based on what they’re likely to need or do.

        Thanks vinitneo for the suggestions. I fully agree with the linking, also other rich text formatting helpers would be usable. Currently you need to insert the html tags in the content field in order to link. That’s not too comfortable.

      Really need a smaller install. Kills the small Nokia N97 C: drive with the full QT install.

      • thewinchesterau 3:49 pm on February 16, 2010 Permalink | Reply

        The 11MB size of the Qt package isn’t the fault of WordPress. However, I totally agree with the sentiment that for users of N97 devices and similar with almost crippled memory sizes, combined with the face Qt is a forced C: install, it makes the decision to use of Qt-developed applications on their handsets that much harder an option.

    • thewinchesterau 3:10 pm on February 16, 2010 Permalink | Reply

      In order of preference

      • Link capability.
      • Spell check.
      • Better description of password box on post screen (thought this was my user password as a security check, not a password to actually view the post). This wouldn’t be immediately obvious to a first time user.
      • Ability to alert to social networks
      • thewinchesterau 3:47 pm on February 16, 2010 Permalink | Reply

        Also, forgot to mention proper display of paragraph breaks in view post screen. Everything appears as one whole big block of text, thus making things difficult to read.

      Photo Preview whilst selecting an image to add to your post, and also maybe a template selection for aligning the image in your post, say, left with text to right with set border, centre, or right with text on the left with set border. As it stands, unless you have previously renamed an image in your library, its hit or miss if you select the right image to insert.

      As mentioned to Janne, Spell checker, he did say this is on the Wishlist which is great.

      More wishes

      Add HTML for embedding videos/images from webspace.

      Add URL, set up where you highlight the text you wish to add a url, then once highlighted, hit add url, and then paste the copied url into the input box.

      Bold, Underline, and align settings please too.

      Im sure I will think of more, so for the time being, keep up the great work guys, your doing yourselves proud.! :)

      • futubanister 9:39 am on February 20, 2010 Permalink | Reply

        Hi Micky,

        Have you noticed that you can preview the images by pressing the green right-arrow in the image selection list? That loads and displays the image (also pressing keypad right should do the trick).

        In early versions we had all the image previews visible when browsing the images to attach. Unfortunately the solution we had was too slow to be usable – generating the thumbnail takes around 0.2 seconds with some devices. Works ok with less than 10 images :)

        Of course the thumbnails could be cached or generated at the background in another thread. Both of these increase the complexity a bit, so we decided to wait until Qt Mobility project gets their “document gallery API” ready: http://qt.nokia.com/developer/new-qt-apis

        Thank you for the wishes. Looks like many of us wants to get the post writing part of the application better. There are not that many comments about comment managing, setting up a blog etc.

      Ok, we will have a problem, and its the connection timing out problem. I just wrote a very long post, possibly 400 words, was a great article too, and after hitting save, it said adding new post for a minute of so, then connection time out message, gutted, as I have lost all my work in that article, and its not saved to drafts either. As soon as I hit save, it went to comments view, and no option to save, also, I still could not copy, and paste my work, so gambled in the hope it would work, but sadly not, really gutted.

    • Micky 5:01 am on February 23, 2010 Permalink | Reply

      A work around for posting a lengthy post, I posted the following article by writing a paragraph at a time, saving it to draft, and then editing it to add another paragraph. This worked fine, so I wonder if the timeout is something to do with the amount of words in a post, or the size which causes the issue?

      • Janne Kalliomäki 8:08 am on February 23, 2010 Permalink | Reply

        Yeah, it makes sense that if you have a bad connection and the server is pretty busy, the network engine is too hasty to terminate the connection due to timeout. A fix to Trac issue #24 should mitigate the issue considerably.

    • Micky 8:16 am on February 23, 2010 Permalink | Reply

      Looking forward to testing the new update. Copy and paste is a must have too during testing, as this would save losing written posts during tests.

    • Micky 4:41 pm on February 24, 2010 Permalink | Reply

      Abstract from my test post with 0.5.3, with some suggestions.

      Previous version also did not allow copy and paste, so you could not even copy your work, and say paste it into an Active Notes page prior to uploading. If upload failed, you lost everything.

      Another suggestion, and request I will add to the WordPress wishlist, is that text will start a new post with a capital letter, and also automatically present a capital letter after a full stop, which this latest build does not.

      Thats it for now, keep up the great work guys.!

    Getting started

    I think we should post these steps also here for those not that familiar with Qt in S60 devices:

    Get started by:
    1. Install Qt libraries from ftp://ftp.qt.nokia.com/pub/qt/symbian/4.6.2/qt_installer.sis
    2. Install WordPress for Nokia client from http://nokia.trac.wordpress.org/export/24/builds/symbian/WordPress_0.5.1_selfsigned.sisx
    3. Submit tickets to http://nokia.trac.wordpress.org/

    N900 users can download .deb -package here: http://nokia.trac.wordpress.org/export/25/builds/maemo/WordPress_0.5.1b.deb
    N900 installation info in this thread: http://dev.nokia.wordpress.org/2010/02/12/maemo-0-5-0-release-uploaded/

    (edit 12th Feb: 0.5.0 –> 0.5.1 and later to 0.5.1b, thanks to Hrw)
    (edit 15th Feb: Qt is now 4.6.2)

          I’m getting the same on my E71. The error comes when an image is attached to the post. I have around 40+ MB of free RAM when I get the error. The error is there even when all the other apps are closed.

            Thanks for the report. I will look into this. Do you by the way have image resizing setting on? Can you try to change the setting and retry? You can change the setting by selecting Blogs from the menu and then Edit.

              Yes tried that. Still giving the error.

              it’s working now without the resize option. A restart of the app after a crash seems to have fixed it!

                Thanks for the info! I’ll open a Trac ticket about the memory consumption.

      Loving the N900 client, VERY well polished and works like a charm. Haven’t had a single issue yet. :)

      HI!
      I’ve installed this app on my Nokia N97 Mini and I am curious, is there a way to logout of a wordpress account once you’ve logged in?

      Also, any idea if you’ll be adding video uploading capability any time soon? I have a paid account to upload video, would love to be able to use it with the app on my N97.

      Many Thanks!!!

      Hi!

      To logout you need to remove the blog – we are not having any means of logging off. What’s your opinion – what would be the use case for such? Using different accounts for same blog?

      Video support is on our list with quite high priority. We need to get the next stable version out (this will happen during June) and after that take a look on our todo’s.

      There will be video support for sure but unfortunately we don’t know the schedule yet.

      Hi, Thank you for your quick response! I work for an educational non-profit that is focusing our program on multimedia blogging. We use nokia N97 mini’s in our camps and we are planning on using your application in our teachings. We are running a trial version of this program this summer and we are looking to expand this program into our year round teachings. As of now, we are planning on using the browser version of wordpress to upload videos, but would prefer to use your app as the browser version is very slow. A logout function would help us in our teachings very much since we work with multiple students each day and do not have a phone for every student. Please let me know if you think this is something that can be done, it would help us very much not to have to uninstall the application each time we have a new class. Thank you!

    Hi all,

    the source code of the 0.5.0 early alpha build has now been committed to svn repository. As usually, you may want to svn co http://nokia.svn.wordpress.org.

    Please check that we didn’t forget anything – the build will follow shortly.

      0.5.0 Symbian build has been uploaded to repository. You can find it here.

      Note that this is a self-signed build, so you may need to change your app. manager settings to allow installation of self-signed binaries.

        I forgot to mention that the build needs 4.6.1 Qt libraries installed.

      So where’s the N900 build?

      Qt for Maemo5 is moving on pretty fast as you can see here and here. The library update 3rd February broke our scroll area and caused some strange behaviour (you cannot scroll at the moment).

      We’ll be fixing that and eventually provide .deb -package for N900 as well. Thanks for your patience.
