Development builds available while 0.7 is being developed

    Hi,

We have decided to start uploading development builds while the 0.7 development cycle is ongoing to give users opportunity to test new features. So here is a Symbian build of the moment (0.6.90). It has been tested briefly, so if something does not work, please open Trac tickets!

The UI should look exactly the same as in 0.6.0, but we have been doing many changes under the hood to prepare for the future changes. The main difference in this build is that comments view performance should be somewhat better than before. You can see it especially when approving comments.

    • Micky Aldridge 1:23 pm on April 26, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Excellent, I will test this right away.

Not sure if its been addressed or not, but when uploading images to my blog via the Symbian app, although the images upload successfully, and show in my blog post, when looking in my Admin area, AND my server side of things, in Media, the these uploaded images are showing a blank white image. Just thought I would mention this in case its relevant.

Also, talking of images, we are currently only being allowed to addach images that are stored on phone memory, and any images stored on either mass memory, or memory card are not showing as available images to add to a post within this app.

Thanks Micky for finding the problem with memory card images, this was a clear bug in the software. I found also some severe bugs in testing today, so I’ll probably make a new build tomorrow.

Maemo build uploaded to Extras-devel repository

    Hello again!

We have managed to upload our Maemo package to the extras-devel repository at maemo.org. So now you do not need to play around with .deb files any more. New installation instructions:

    1. Make sure that you have extras-devel repository enabled (see here for details).
    2. Refresh package data.
    3. Install wordpress. It is located in the Network category of Application manager.

The icon of the application is not visible for some reason, but we will fix that in the coming days. Any feedback is welcome, as always!

Is it the 0.5.4a version that has been uploaded? Installed it yesterday and seems to work fine. Some more lines space for the post text would be appreciated though. ;-)

Yes, 0.5.4a with one bugfix. Thank you for the suggestion, it will be considered when we next update the UI.

Kiitos Paljon for that one dude. A quick question – updated to 0.5.4-4 today and everything working fine but when I was updating from the .debs to 0.5.4a it gave a warning that I was ‘downgrading’ from 0.6. Any ideas?

    • Simon 5:05 am on March 18, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I seem to be unable to fetch posts with all the maemo5 releases. Only specific posts come in, for some reason. All my posts are visible, published and other applications can poll and view them just fine.

Any reason for this? It’s a hosted account at WordPress.com – if that matters at all. Who can I speak with directly in order to resolve this?

      • futubanister 5:27 am on March 18, 2010 Permalink | Reply

        Hi Simon,

This sounds like a permission issue. I have similar issues with the blogs that I am not administrator of (i.e. this dev-blog).

You can see only comments to your posts, right (just a guess)?

See Trac ticket #4: http://nokia.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/4 – if that looks like your issue, feel free to add a comment there.

        BR

    • Simon 1:33 pm on March 18, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Thanks for the reply. It seems to be the same problem, but I am the owner and administrator of the blog. For instance, using MaStory – I am able to get all the posts. Is there a log file stored somewhere, or a way to enable verbose debug mode?

      Thnaks.

    • Janne Kalliomäki 12:20 pm on March 19, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Okay, the icon is now working in the latest builds on maemo.org. You can upgrade your client from the application manager.

    • Magnu 1:44 pm on March 20, 2010 Permalink | Reply

As a sidenote… How did you solve the ‘icon problem’. I also have a Qt app, and the application icon only appears on the N900 after a reboot. Is that the problem you’ve fixed?

      • Janne Kalliomäki 2:26 pm on March 20, 2010 Permalink | Reply

That seems to be a different issue. Our problem was that the application binary and icon files are capitalized, but desktop file referred to a lowercase wordpress.png, which of course was not found. We should really change all files to lowercase to avoid these kind of issues in the future.

    0.5.4 released

    Hello everybody!

We are proud to release version 0.5.4 (Maemo and Symbian). The highlight of the release is that we have added new buttons, with which it is a lot easier to add text formatting and links to your blog posts. The buttons are still work-in-progress, so any feedback is welcome.

We have also fixed some bugs. Image upload memory usage has been optimized. And if there is a network error while publishing a post or page, it is saved to local drafts. The application has better error messages as well.

Stay tuned for the next version with stats support!

Edit: While we were preparing this release, we managed to fix ticket #23, so I have uploaded new binaries that contain the fix as 0.5.4a. Otherwise, the packages are the same.

Ok, wrote a lengthy post, and set category, and to publish, and “Adding a new post” showed on screen for around a minute, then “Error Occurred, Connection Timed Out”.

Luckily my long post was saved to drafts as promised.

        Some observations.

When starting a new post, when you start to type the first word, it would be nice it it started with a capital letter. The same can be said after a full stop also, it would be a great user advantage if these were included in the public release.

I am yet to test out the new buttons, but will do this shortly, and let you know how I get on.

Once the connection times out, and saves post to draft, when resending to publish, it almost does this without fail, and very quickly. Just thought I should let you know.

Okay, good to know that, thank you for the report. This is something that we should look deeper into.

By the way, Qt 4.7 should have many networking improvements. It is due to be released before summer, so only in a couple of months.

          Hi Augusto,

you need to disable the certificate check. As we produce builds quite often we are not signing the builds yet. This means that you have to allow installing self-signed software.

Steps for this (I have only E75 atm):
Menu –> Control Panel –> App Manager –> Options –> Settings –> Software installation: “All”

You can reset that option after installing WordPress.

Please remember guys, when installing the qt libraries, and wordpress client, all of these need to be installed onto your phone memory, and not doing so will result in unexpected errors.

Update guys. I just tried to add a photo to a post for the first time with this version, and after selecting “Add Photos” button, the prompt pops up briefly to let me know its organizing, but then Im faced with a white screen, withe the two options, “select” & “cancel” showing. blank, and now photo preview, nothing.

      • Micky 4:59 am on March 19, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Ok, I think my particular problem with photos may of been down to my actual N97 itself, so have once again hard reset it, and formatted mass memory. Many of my photos were showing as broken in the default Nokia photo gallery, so installed Nokia Photo Browser, but that didn’t display any, so an hard reset, and start a fresh was needed anyway.

Will let you know how I get on today once I have reinstalled everything.

        • Micky 6:27 am on March 19, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Further update. Sorted out my images now after an hard reset, reinstalled WordPress, and qt libraries fine, however, Im still experiencing the same problem, no photos showing to select/add, just a white screen. This is with camera settings set to store captured photos to memory card, so will try mass storage next see if that works. Will update shortly.

            Thanks Micky,

we need to double-check where the images are retrieved from. Unfortunately Qt does not provide a nice, clean solution for accessing images – therefore there are some hardcoded paths.

We hope that this will change during the spring when we’ll start using Qt Mobility API’s.

First attempt to add the photo visible on mass memory, added correctly, however, was unable to see where image was inserted into post so could not align, or adjust/preview, then upon selecting publish, and set category, selecting save, and then was prompted “Editing post” but then received error, connection timed out.

Second attempt, prompted correctly, “Uploading a file”, but again, received an error, “Error Occurred” Connection Error, this was shown quite quickly after hitting Save.

3rd time, not lucky sadly, fails to upload file to add image. Possibly related to image resizer?

                • Micky 6:40 am on March 19, 2010 Permalink | Reply

When you add a photo, the add photo bar located below the bold, and italic, links etc, does this change from saying “Adding 1 new photo” to “added”? As I see it at the moment, its unclear what the WordPress App is doing, I selected a file/photo, but as said previously, there is no image preview, or any script to see where the photo is being added in said post.

                  • Micky 6:42 am on March 19, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Ok, tried for a 4th time, and “Uploading a file” stayed on the screen much longer this time, approx 40 seconds, then Error Occurred, Connection Timed Out prompt.

                    • Micky 6:48 am on March 19, 2010 Permalink | Reply

What Im trying next, is to resize the image on the phone, as currently the size of the captured photo is quite big. Resized to 320×240, and BINGO, it works.!

So it looks like you may have a problem with the app resizer on large images.

No problem Janne, & BR, as you know, I’m always keen to help, and test. I will be continuing to test even further today experimenting with various image sizes to try and narrow down the limitations that the app is having problems with. I will be taking photos with my N97 with the following settings.

      MMS 0.3 – Small
      Print 2M – Medium

I have already found that the setting below fails due to it being quite a large image..

      Print 5 – Large

Will report back with my findings later guys.!

I’m new here. I’m trying to install Qt and then WordPress for Nokia 0.5.4a on my N97 (v21 firmware) and it appears to install OK. Both to C.
But whenever I try to run WordPress, it crashes or reboots the phone.

I know space on the C drive is a
problem but I had about 40 MB
before and 12 MB after. Is that
      enough? Only significant thing
have installed to C is Ovi Maps
3.04 which I am reluctant to
      uninstall.

I experienced the same issue as yourself Jose, but with Ovi Maps and 0.5.3 of wordpress. Try removing qt libraries completely and reinstalling. I have no problems now with 0.5.4a and Ovi Maps 3.04, and I too have an N97 with V21

        • Micky 10:05 am on March 20, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Experimenting with Multiple image attachments, I have found that when the initial post fails due to connection error, when you go into drafts you have to re-add the images that you chose to attach the first time, as its not currently keeping any attachments.

Also, it would be great if we could have some custom settings for images, so we can have the image inserted into the post in relation to the post content, header, or title of specific photo, because at the moment, all images are added in succession, one after the other, with no option to break, or add words between them..

Also as mentioned before to you guys, the current resize option, for me, needs a custom setting, even if this was basic, small medium, and large, it would work. Currently, as you can see from my screenshot below, the minimum resize function of 640px X 480px is too big, and the small resized image (see screenshot smaller photo), of 320px X 240px is too small, so ideally, we should at least have the option to set a medium side around 480px X 360px, which would be perfect for most WordPress blogs.

          Here’s my screenshot.

Hi, here’s an alternative link http://twitpic.com/19trku.
I’m using an N97(v21), but have had the same problem on E55 and 5530.

The latter problem meant that the edit page view doesn’t open, and as you’ll see from the link, I can’t even tell which page I’m asking for the edit view of anyway.

I would be very happy to open a trac ticket, but I don’t know how or where to do this. Could you please post a link for where your ticket tracking system for this project is please.

Can you check what version is your WordPress installation or are you using wordpress.com blog? The post/page data in the client somehow seems corrupted, and that could cause several issues.

I can edit anything I want via my desktop web browser. The only out the ordinary thing I’m doing is restricting access to my WP admin pages for only my home IP address. Although, seeing as how my phones are accessing the internet via the same WiFi router as my laptop is, I can’t see that being an issue.

    0.5.2 released

    Hi everybody,

We are releasing 0.5.2 to get rid of some bugs in previous releases. Download Maemo build or Symbian build.

Symbian users: the build has been linked against 4.6.2 Qt libraries, so please upgrade your Qt to 4.6.2 before installing.

Maemo users: the data file location has changed, so you need to re-enter your blog details after upgrading. This should not happen anymore in the future.

    Changes since 0.5.1 release:

    Common to both platforms:
    1. The application no longer writes a debug log file.

    Maemo-specific changes:
    1. Add photos dialog now finds images taken with the device camera.
    2. The executable is now installed to /opt so that precious rootfs space is not wasted.
    3. The data and other cache files are stored in different space so that they are easy to clean up in uninstall.

For installation instructions, please see this post by futubanister.

If you installed by transferring the files via bluetooth, you should remove the old files from your inbox, they spend a lot of space there.

Also check with the file browser if there is anything in the phone memory that you can move to the memory card, like ringtones, wallpapers etc.

Thanks, yes, that is exactly what was the problem, its a real shame, that with a Nokia Flagship device we have to face these memory problems.

Anyway, all installed fine now, and I have only 20mb of phone memory left. Will post a couple of tests posts, short ones this time, and see how it goes. Have you added Copy and paste functionality in this release btw?

Are there plans to implement a spell checker in future releases? Also the loading bar appears to be working in this release, where as before it appeared frozen, and thus resulting in worry. Maybe the loading status bar could be changed to an intelligent one, similar to the one found in Gravity, the twitter app, whereas the scrolling goes back and forth similar to knight rider light, and then when actual data is being transferred, it shows this in segment increases. just an idea.

      As said, great work.!

Thanks for the compliments! A spell checker is in the wishlist, but there is no ETA yet, as we have not yet decided the feature set of 0.6 release. The progess bar by the way seemed to have been fixed in Qt 4.6.2, so Qt is also progressing rapidly.

Hi and thanks for the report! This sounds like some kind of a network problem. Are you sure you are using the latest build (0.5.2)? 0.5.0 had a severe bug that caused these issues, but later versions should work.

In case you are already using the latest version, can you please send the URL of your blog to me, either by replying to this comment or by email (janne.kalliomaki@futurice.com), so I can see if there is a problem in parsing the RSD API urls from the main page of your blog.

      Tested….
      some problems….
      1. Switching from landscape to portrait takes time.
      2. Phone becomes unresponsive for 10-15 seconds after exiting the app.
      3. T9 text entry has lots of problem like not going capital after full stop and STAYING CAPITAL and the inserting symbols is impossible… symbols are inserted at the start of the post.

      ———————–
waiting for inserting links, better way of inserting inline image, videos???
need more formatting options, spell check.
      ——-
Besides the above points everything is working fine. I published this post without a problem via the wordpress app – http://tinyurl.com/ylkzt57

Regarding the T9 I could use some more detailed examples. As I am not using the N97 myself it is hard to figure out when the T9 is not behaving as normal

Ok, details – the first letter of the word is not capital, so i make it capital and it should become small from the next letter of the word (example – Toy) but it stays capital (example TOY) and I have to manually turn it small.
In T9 when entering symbols the cursor automatically resets to the start of the paragraph
I hope that explains it, if you have doubt on anything please ask me.

I’ve tested this version on a 5530 found the following:

      • Comments and pages are showing as blank boxes.
      • Comments that are already approved published get a drop-menu option to be approved.
      • Nothing happens when I select to view comments.
      • Nothing happens when I select to edit pages (and there’s no option to view or open them).

      Here’s a screen shot http://twitpic.com/14dg3g

Could you advise me where to post an official ticket for this please.

I tried to install Qt and then WordPress for Nokia on my N97 and it appeared to install fine. but whenever I try to run it, it reboots the phone.
I know space on the C drive is a problem but I had about 40 MB before and 12 MB after. Is that enough? Only significant thing have installed to C is Ovi Maps which I am reluctant to uninstall.
Sorry if this has been covered before. I’ve searched but can’t find anything.

    0.5.1 released

As 0.5.0 had a couple of severe issues, we are releasing 0.5.1 immediately to fix them. So please download the Symbian or the Maemo build.

This build fixes an issue with HTTP redirects, so your custom WordPress installations should work much better now. Maemo version no longer has black text on black background in the drop-down menus.

If you have any test results or feedback, please let us know!

Edit: Maemo build had a grave packaging issue, so the new 0.5.1b build is fixed. So if you installed the plain 0.5.1, please reinstall. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Just a quick note to say I tested 0.5.0 on a 5530 (5th Edition) and E55 (3rd Edition FP2) this evening. It worked fine on the 5530, just comments wouldn’t load when tapped, and the boxes in the comment list were blank.

However, had more trouble with the E55 because there was no way for me to call up the symbol menu on the username and password boxes.

      • Janne Kalliomäki 11:03 pm on February 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Hi David, can you please post a Trac ticket about the 5530 problems, preferably with some kind of screenshots. The problem sounds pretty weird.

About the symbol menu, can you try if a long press of * button works?

          Hi,
I’ll do that for the 5530.
As for the E55, yes I managed to get the symbol menu up – so that was my mistake.

Have just grabbed this version having been alerted to it by Symbian Guru, and I’d have to say its quite robust.

Despite using the Qt framework (which is an 11MB min payload & forced C: install, a pain for N97 users), its well presented and worked first time. Look forward to seeing how it progresses.

Just wrote out a detailed post, twice, only to lose everything I typed. It didn’t save to drafts, and the second time I typed my post out on my N97, which Im using now, I tried to copy and paste a backup, but sadly, holding down the shift on the N97 didn’t bring up the copy option.

    • Micky 7:19 pm on February 16, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Sorry, forgot to mention, it was approx 200 word post I lost twice, and the error I got was connection error timed out.

also, navigating around the typed text with the N97 dpad is tricky. Left and right is fine, but if you press up or down, instead of the cursor moving from line to line in written text, it move the the above, or below fields.

      • Janne Kalliomäki 8:13 pm on February 16, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Thanks for the report, the first issue is clearly a bug, which has to be fixed. I opened a ticket for it.

If you think the navigation issue is serious, you can open a ticket for it. Personally, I think that the current way is better, as without it, it’d take ages to scroll through a very long post.

    • Micky 5:02 am on February 17, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Thanks Janne, yes, Im wondering if it was due to the size of the post why it timed out.?

As for the navigation through post text, its not that much of a problem, as you can simply touch the screen to move cursor.

The Copy and Paste bug certainly needs fixing for sure.

Short installation instructions may be helpful:

      1. Go to App manager -> Application catalogues
      2. Enable maemo.org (or “Extras”) if it’s disabled
      3. Install System -> rootsh
      4. Add new catalogue:

        Name: Maemo Extras-devel
        Address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/
        Distribution: fremantle
        Components: free non-free
      5. Move the .deb package to Documents when the device is plugged in at PC Suite mode
      6. Open X Terminal and type the following commands (accept installations when asked):

        > sudo gainroot
        > apt-get install libqt4-maemo5-webkit
        > apt-get install libqt4-maemo5-svg
        > apt-get install libqt4-maemo5-dbus
        > cd MyDocs/.documents/
        > dpkg -i WordPress-0.5.0.deb
      7. If I missed something (libqt4-maemo5-core or libqt4-maemo5-gui?) be free to comment here!

The plan is to merge all bug fixes from the trunk to 0.5 branch and then release regular well-tested snapshots from the branch as 0.5.1, 0.5.2 and so on. Any comments or opinions?

We’re looking into the problem. But a workaround seems to be to set the default access point in your phone settings. You can set it to internet in settings> connectivity> destinations> options> default connection and make sure in settings> connectivity> destinations> internet valid access points are defined. Let me know if the problem persists with this modification

Im really interested in trying this out, and reporting any found bugs to you guys etc, however, I need to know a couple of things before I go ahead and install.

I have an N97 running V21 firmware, and those who already own an N97 will know, lack of RAM, and memory in this device is quite restricting on what we can install to phone memory.

Would I be given the chance to choose where to install the qt Installer, and if so, if I were to choose Mass memory, would the qt libraries also be installed to mass memory, or phone memory? This is very important to know to all N97 owners out there.

              Thanks in advance

Hi, Qt installer does have an option to install to different drives. However, you might run into performance issues if you do not install it to phone memory.

Still, I suggest to go ahead and try and report here if you have any issues!

As promised, I said I would let you know my findings with the installation on N97 running V21.

Seeing as previous testers reported that installing to mass memory worked, I can confirm, that even though you choose to install the qt installer to mass memory, it does in fact install to phone memory, taking up a whooping 12MB of resources.

Its working very well so far on my N97, but with less that 10MB of phone memory left after installation, things are about to get a little bumpy.

Hi, 0.5.1 is released, you can download it from here. The only change for Symbian is that it works much better if your blog is in a subdirectory, i.e. domain.com/blog.

The update checker will be developed in the near future. The server side functionality exists already, so all we need is to implement the check in the client, which should not be too hard. Hopefully that will be available in 0.6 or 0.7!

My problem is also with QT It takes up 12mb of C in N97 any way to reduce that to 3-4 mb or install QT to maps memory only. Is it not possible to make this app not require QT at all?

We can investigate a bit what we can do about the memory consumption. Qt dependency cannot be broken, but perhaps we do not need the full set of libraries. Let’s see.

Wouldn’t there still be _some_ application that requires the libraries that we possibly unnecessarily include? So when Qt comes more popular it doesn’t really matter how much of Qt we’re using, right? (Users will have all the libraries installed anyway)

Yes, you are right. But as we have had several commenters noting that they do not have enough memory, I think that the memory consumption issue is severe and at least some time should be spent investigating it.

you are right but what are we supposed to do about the memory? Less than 10 mb in C drive starts creating problem. A good solution would be installing QT to Mass Memory, but it won’t install only in C…. any way to change that?

I mean it’ll install only in C……any way to change that?

It’s basically impossible unless you create your own packages of Qt libraries. The current packages are hard-coded to install in the C drive.

My problem is that I can’t install qt_installer.sis. I feel that it is “install always to C drive” issue. There is a failure beep during installation, and after that I just see qt installer in App manager. No Qt nor QtWebKit, which are required by WordPress. And WordPress installation states that too.

Well, ok now it works. Instead of using PC suite to install it, I just copied qt sis to my mass memory from PC and installed from phone (n97mini) to C drive. I won’t try to figure out the reason why it didn’t work earlier. It was either the PC suite or installation to mass memory.

Am I missing something here? Whenever I write a test post, it saves to Drafts, and does not publish it live, I then have to go to my MacBook, load up WordPress Dashboard, and then publish. Is there something I’m doing wrong here?

The default post status is draft, so you need to change it to published using a drop-down menu.

Hi Micky, could you have a look at ticket http://nokia.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/18 and let me know if this is still an issue? Thanks a lot in advance!

So far, I have not experienced the time out, but then again, I have not yet tried a 200 post count since, but will create one today, and see if it works or not. I will update here my findings pten.

Hi pten, tested a 150 word test last night with adding an image, and it worked perfectly, N97 V21. Could really do with adding spell checker, and image preview though, but will add these to the wishlist post for 0.6
